Tips on hand-washing and drying laundry?

Hi, I don't have a car right now and can't get to the laundromat. I don't even know where the laundromats are and I can't afford a cab AND an expensive laundromat. I need to know how I can get my clothes at least wearable in the tub. I do have detergent. Can I do this with denim? How about dress slacks? I know they will be wrinkly already. Does anyone have advice?
