What wearable length should the jewelry be for a fresh lip piercing?

Im piercing my own lip. I already have 16g hollow needles coming, but what should the wearable length be for the fresh piercing to accomodate swelling? I have heard 1/2, i have heard 3/8, i don't really know lol.
